Conservatives Abroad salutes the inclusion in the Conservative Party manifesto of the pledge to legislate for ‘votes for life’ for British overseas electors:
"Our democratic institutions may be ancient but should not be neglected. We will continue to modernise and improve our electoral registration process, making it as accessible as possible so that every voice counts. We will legislate for votes for life for British overseas electors." (Conservative Party manifesto, Forward Together, May 2017, p.42).
Chris Skidmore, Minister for the Constitution, said:
"Theresa May’s manifesto pledge re-affirms the Conservative commitment to ‘votes for life’, scrapping the Labour Government's arbitrary 15-year rule. British citizens who move abroad remain a part of our democracy and it is important they have the ability to participate. Following the British people’s decision to leave the EU, we now need to strengthen ties with countries around the world and show the UK is an outward-facing nation. Our expat community has an important role to play especially in helping Britain expand international trade and make a success of Brexit. Britain needs a strong and stable government to get the best Brexit deal for our country. Only Theresa May and her local Conservative candidates will provide the strong and stable leadership our country needs."
Voter registration deadline is May 22nd www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
