Tribute to Harry Shindler OBE
It is with great sadness we announce that 101 year old Harry Shindler OBE, our friend and colleague died today where he lived in Italy.
Harry was the inspiration for ‘Votes for Life’ the voting rights of Britons abroad. It was an honour to work with him over many years and those who campaigned with him became part of his ‘Army’. Harry never stopped working and his frequent phone calls set out even more new challenges. He was working on his second book which he said may be called ‘My first One Hundred Years’.
Many of his fellow campaigners went to Italy last year to celebrate his 101st birthday in July and Harry was celebrated at the House of Lords last November for his tireless work on ‘Votes for Life’ which reached the statute book last April – we were all proud to be part of his success.
He was a World War II veteran of the Battle of Anzio and the Liberation of Rome, a truly remarkable man who also devoted much of his life to tracing the graves of British servicemen who died in the Second World War.
I was very proud to be part of his ‘Army’ and will dearly miss him and the sound of his voice as he answered his phone “Pronto!”
May he rest in peace.
